53:04 :: 8 miles

Easy run. Really tired yesterday evening. Went to bed early, got 8+ hours of sleep. Felt a little bit snappier today. Legs less tired, although still flat. Standing HR of 53, average HR for the run at 138 (again!). Tomorrow or Thursday I should be ready for a workout. Running a 12k on June 23.

Once in a while, I get a light massage from my wife--I can't (won't--too cheap!) afford the real thing, but the thing that really helps recovery after a hard workout is a Slim-Fast and a cold-water bath.

You can read about the Slim-Fast (chocolate milk is roughly the same, cheaper, and easier to find) here.

Cold water baths are a brutal, stone age tool introduced to me by Mystery Coach. Draw a tub full of cold water (about 50F) deep enough to immerse your hips fully when sitting down, legs outstretched in front of you, and sit for about 15 minutes. The first time is difficult and cold, so bring some hot tea, coffee, or cocoa. Subsequent baths will be easier.

Recovery tactics like these should be used following hard or long workouts--once or twice a week in most programs. If you feel like you need recovery drinks and cold baths more often than that, you are probably running too fast on your easy runs.

Happy running!
