MSUM 10K :: 32:34 - 6th Place

Rust buster for sure. Got out well the first two miles, then had a tough third mile into the breeze (5:20) before putting together a solid second half of 16:14.

5:11(160) | 5:08(172) | 5:20(170)
5:13(170) | 5:14(170) | 5:12(171)
1:18(174)

The last bit of the race came out to .27 miles on the GPS, which, interestingly is .21 plus what seems to be the 'Garmin Factor' of .01 per mile. Based on my experience, the Garmin is extremely accurate, as long as you accept that every mile is recorded .01 short. Why this can't be corrected in software, I don't know. It's so consistent, it should be.

Had a good battle in the last two miles with the seventh place runner. That definitely kept me in the race mentally.

Have a good holiday! Cheers!

Good job, Eric. I can only dream of running as fast as you. I'll take your 'rust busters' any day. What a beautiful morning for a race, eh? I didn't get a PR but I was less than a minute off that. Pretty good race for me. Lost a bit of steam in the last mile but otherwise, pretty consistent.

I did sense a disturbance in the force the other day, but it's only now I realize it was due to you not finishing in first place.

Seriously though, nice time and fine execution according to the heart rates. Isn't 174 about your max?

It has been a while since I put myself in a race that I could get smoked in! haha

It looks like my HR has dropped a couple of beats. My maxHR in this race was 175 according to the Garmin, and I sustained a 174 average for the last 400m or so. Last year I was hovering in the 176-178 range, so it might be dropping. But, I know it varies by one or two bpm depending on how aerobically fit I am at the time. I wouldn't be surprised to see it jump back up to 178-ish during the summer while I am working on speed.

Mystery Coach pointed out that I hit the numbers (mentioned in his last post) pretty well. I thought I ran like a pussy, especially during the third mile, so I was surprised that the numbers matched up so well. Excuse the language, I am drunk right now. =) Cheers!

Hey Eric good run. The heart rate monitoring your doing has re-kindled some interest I had in this. I found that my polar monitor I used to have didn't work very well sometimes, especially at the start of the run. The heart rate would sky rocket. I assume you have a garmin 305. Do you notice any anomalies like this?

Thanks, Rob. Yes, I used to see it all the time. It was a contact issue--since I have started wetting the contacts, it stopped happening. Give that a try.

What holiday? Oh yeah, the 4th of July - I remember the fireworks at San Diego in '06 being big.

Interesting point about the Garmins, maybe the .01% is on purpose as people are less likely to complain about long courses than short ones?

I think the HR in intervals would be a little higher - I've seen 164 in 1k repeats, but only 160-161 at the end of races. Mine has dropped over the years - used to race in the low 170s in my 30s, now race in the 155-160 range.

Good race by the way - that 10k PB seems within range.
