30:00 :: 4.3 miles

Easy run. Another sore day for the toe and ankle, as well as the foot(!). Not as bad as yesterday, so it's improving. Outside of right foot (initially hurt back around April on a windy 20 miler) is flaring up again. Ran in cutout Ohanas, which eliminated the pain completely. Did 30 minutes of running, mostly on grass, and fifteen minutes of easy (still not so easy) cycling. Cold bath for the entire lower leg, and more ibuprofen today.

Found a cool article...
Beating the Heat (this one's for Mike)

I like the punchline:
"So perhaps the best strategy is to just accept discomfort and slowness."

That 2.5% decrease in performance due to heat and humidity adds 4 minutes to a marathoner's time if his P.R. is run at 6 minute pace. Definitely something to think about. Now I just have to explain those extra 7 minutes at Twin Cities instead of 11, right?

Sorry the foot is giving you grief. I get pain, tenderness and a little inflammation along the outside of my right foot every few months, but it seems to go away after four or five days. Chopping up your shoes and running on grass sounds like as good a remedy as anything else.

Nice link. Thanks. I may use it with attribution to your blog.

Good luck with the foot.

I thought we went over the Twin Cities race already. =)

Lawrence, you can just use the link, and give the attribution to the New York Times!

I'd love to see a photo of the improvised shoes. Maybe you can market them, make millions, and while away the rest of your days running and blogging.

Cycling is just not natural.

'Walks up to him slowly' I think he's dead...'pokes with stick'. A slight movement in the right calf...maybe not?

How is the foot?

Eric,

Hope your injury is healing. I'm very impressed with your dedication to the technical/physiological aspects as it pertains to your training. With that being said, have you ever heard of or used powercranks. Go to www.powercranks.com to see what they are and how they may be utilized as part of your training regimen. I've never used powercranks before, but I'm always open to new training techniques and devices. Let me know your thoughts?

What's happening Eric?

Your legions of fans are wondering if the wheels are on, off or merely loosened.

Legions? Really? I was thinking more like squads, or maybe a platoon, if I'm lucky. haha

Anyway, I'm having some problems, very schizophrenic problems. I'm having some on again/off again pain from my big toe, through my ankle, and high up into my calf. It's been with me for some time since the 10K, and has really been bothering me since the 400s (last post). For example, the pain was the worst it has been on Saturday, then completely gone on Sunday, then moderate yesterday, and bad again today.

I've tried all kinds of different strategies--icing, taping, supportive shoes, bare feet, soft surfaces, strength exercises, running through it, time off...nothing seems to get me down the path consistently.

At this point, I've decided to try my old standby, pool running. A week or so of pool running has always cured my ailments, as well as given me a new appreciation of what boredom *really* is.

Joe, I had never heard of PowerCranks. I took a look at the website, and they definitely sound interesting, but with a pricetag only a triathlete could love, there's no way I would even try them. I thought *maybe* for $200, and $300 tops, but for $900+, forget it. Those things can't cost more than $50 to manufacture. I can't believe they wouldn't make more money by cutting the price in half and doing more marketing.

To the pool...
