First day in the pool. Getting used to the different feeling--it's similar to beginning cycling, with the slight burn in the quads and calf. Calves cramped up a bit toward the end, but otherwise it was uneventful. Hacked together a 'waterproof' iPod with a ziplock, a Boston Red Sox hat, and some athletic tape. Most impressive, and even better, it works! No boredom today whatsoever.

We're going to need pictures of you poolrunning with this contraption.
I'm with Greg.
Speaking of cycling, will you be supplementing the pool running with some miles in the saddle?
Wow... I think you better try and sell that to Apple.
Eric,
I hope the pool running treats you well. I've always had a problem getting my HR up when pool running. Do you have any secrets for getting your HR up when pool running? BTW, is your fantasy football team still called "kittens". If so, there is a great song by the group Underworld (techno/trance) called "kittens" that would make a great theme song for your fantasy football team. Check it out.

Eric-
you may already know this but Pete Pfitzinger has a wonderful weekly workout for pool running on his website. Lot's of various "workouts" to help the time pass.
Also, as Joe was asking, one should NOT expect their HR to be near "running" HR on land. Pete mentioned a number near 10% less or possibly more. When I had to pool run last winter I was happy with HR near 130 during my "workouts" and that was difficult to sustain longer than his prescribed interval times. Usually it was in the 120's between sets. Just food for thought.
Gregg
I was going to suggest a waterproof iPod whilst you're logging all those nil miles. Lucky you weren't peaking for Beijing.
Sounds like an odd injury - nerve related maybe? If the week of boredom doesn't do it, acupuncture could be worth a stab.
I'll do you one better than pictures.
No plans to supplement the pool running, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt. Well, it wouldn't hurt except for my crotch.
Thanks for the tip on the Pfitzinger workouts, Gregg. I'll check them out.
My HR usually hovers around 105-110 in the pool during easy stuff, and can go as high as 135-140 during shorter, hard reps. Mystery Coach mentioned about a 25bpm differential, which seems to fit perfectly with the HRs I experience. It's similar to the bike in that most of your weight is supported, so there is less CV demand. It's the effort, not the HR, that counts.
My WBFL team is nicknamed the Kitten, but the full name is Happy Danger Kitten, typically written in kanji characters to get the full effect of how awesome my team is. We are the first and only Japan-based WBFL franchise in the formidable history of the league.
I've been using Interpol's song 'Obstacle 1' as our theme song. It has an oriental sound. I'll check out that Underworld song. I love me some techno.
Thanks for the comments and questions. Cheers!
Glad to hear you're still alive.
Really I just wanted to comment so there could be 3 different greg's in your comment section.
I thought it would have been realllly clever if you would have posted as greggg. haha! I'll give you a break, though, as you are probably tired from all of the 100+ mile weeks! =)
Of course, I never run out of clever comments with Ewen around (acupuncture...stab...nice one!)
Thanks for the comments.
Hi Eric,
sorry to hear about the injury problem, it kind of sounds like a sciatic nerve problem the way the pain moves around and all!
havin had sciatic problems myself for years on and off [ mostly calf and foot pain] I always go to see my local friendly CHIROPRACTOR which always seems to sort the problem out, its amazing how a few twists and cracks later with a realigned spine the pain just eases away!
Hope you don't have to endue the pool for much longer and can hit the road pretty soon.
all the best!
Hope you haven't drowned...or worse yet, gotten electrocuted by the iPod.
Hi ERIC,
HOWS ABOUT AN UPDATE ON YOUR PROGRESS,
