1:30:00 :: 13.3 miles

Easy run. Interesting HR data today. 129HR average for the entire run, 144 maxHR, and 6:46 pace average overall. Far and away the lowest HR at that pace in a long time, if not ever. Really nice weather this morning. Not much wind, 50F, and misting. Probably the nicest day so far this spring. Good run.

What do you make of the low HR?

Perhaps a combined 'bounce' from the marathon and evaluation run? A new level of fitness?

I forgot to mention that on hot days (33C+) my HR is higher so evaluation run data would be dodgy.

For comparing runs on the same course, I use the RS scale (Robert Song) - AHR * Ave Pace = X. A low X value supposedly shows good fitness.

Thanks for the answers about the mental temptations of weakness. I was tested on Tuesday doing my tempo run through neighborhoods at 6pm - EVERYONE was barbecuing and I hadn't eaten since breakfast.

Ewen, I've never heard of the RS scale. For average pace you use seconds per km?

G'day Sky. I call it the "RS scale" - it's used by a blogging friend.

We use minutes per kilometre, but you could use minutes per mile. Using the former, Eric's run would be 542 on the RS scale. Now if he ran the same course in 1:27:00 @ AHR 136 it would be worth 553, so not as "good" even though the run is faster. If he ran 1:32:00 @ AHR 125 it would be worth 537, so better on the RS scale although slower.

Thanks for the details and link, Ewan. I realized the stupidity of my question after I posted it - it doesn't matter what you use since it's a relative and not absolute comparison.

Sundog - exactly how much strength training is "none! No strength work at all. Not even situps." I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around that - you look ripped in the marathon photos. I guess you usually do, though. And regarding your comment about the extra 25-30 miles per week - I agree completely. That's why I hit 120 a couple times in August '97 and kept it above 70 through mid-October. Come to think of it I didn't start racing poorly until I backed off the mileage.
