Long run. Really great run on the treadmill. Felt like I could have gone on forever (or at least another 3-4 miles). Weather outside was decent, but for some reason the treadmill was calling me. Probably for the better, too, as being on the mill really helped me control the pace, and I'm sure it kept me from finishing too hard toward the end. Did the first 10 around 6:50-7:00 pace, and the last 11+ at 6:35-6:40 with the last five minutes or so right at 6:00 pace. Took about 100 kcal drink at 12 miles. Didn't feel the leg at all. No soreness or anything to speak of. Really great run.
Lesson learned: do NOT watch Little House on the Prairie while running on the mill, especially if it is a particularly poignant episode, and especially if you are a particularly emotional person when you are running. It was, and I am, and that equals an accident waiting to happen!
Ni!

That's a tough MENTAL workout. Nice choice of show to watch while running.
I am making a conscious decision to use the treadmill more this winter for a couple of reasons: 1)I've proven to myself that I can run outside in really, really, ridiculously adverse conditions. I'm not gaining as much from the mental workout as I used to. 2)I think I am giving up too much in terms of quality training by avoiding use of the treadmill for hard workouts. Some of those crappy days outside compromise the potential of some workouts. 3)Treadmill workouts are harder than outdoor workouts, and I am intimidated by them. Whenever you can say that, it's time to pay some attention to that aspect of training. To some extent. I'm intimidated by mountain lions, too, but I'm not about to let one chase me down and try to eat me in order to improve my marathon time.
Anyway, it's another one of those, "if it doesn't kill you it should make you stronger" things. The right training is always whatever training you need.
It's interesting that you consider treadmill workouts to be harder than outdoor workouts. Is this solely because the bad weather keeps you from a desired pace?
I often (but not always) find short, hard w/o's easier on a treadmill. That's just me though.
Good question. Usually the compromise is traction, but sometimes it's restricted movement due to clothing, or restricted breathing because of facemask(s). The result is either a slower pace or higher HR for the effort, which isn't a big deal. The bigger problem is injury potential. Sliding around all winter really does a number on my legs. It will be interesting to see if less pounding and slipping on frozen concrete reduces the number of problems I have during the buildup.
A 7 mile tempo or a 20 miler with the last 10 at marathon pace would be good examples of the kinds of workouts I'll try to do indoors this time around. They are definitely hard workouts outdoors as well, but they feel faster and more difficult on the mill for some reason. Some of it has to be boredom!
I never had you down as one of the emotional types. How wrong can you be.
I cannot possibly imagine spending 145 minutes on a treadmill, but then again I don't have your winter problems (I've got my own ones instead).
Mood-wise, I'm reptilian in real life, but for some reason, when I start running I get pretty unstable (happy, angry, sad, rinse, repeat). Must be something to do with adrenaline. Weird.
I would suggest your winter conditions are worse than mine. Cold rain is hard to dress for. I'd take -20F over 40F and rain any day. Maybe you need a treadmill! (sorry Mrs. B!)
Great zero mile run! I'm glad to see things are going along nicely again. Sorry if I missed it in an earlier post, but what are the season's plans? Sub 2:30 title defense?
21 miles on a treadmill, shit that sounds dehydrating.
Maybe you should go for the treadmill marathon world record;
Treadmill Marathon - Current world record
1. Eric Blake (USA) ran a complete Marathon on a treadmill in 2:21:40 hrs on 24 June 2006 at Malibu Fitness Center in Farmington (Connecticut, USA).
or,
you could go for the treadmill 24 hour record of 160.24 miles.
Nice to see you back on the road, I mean treadmill!
I agree that you could get better targeted training on the mill but I tend to sweat much more on the mill than when running outside - then again I don't think I could run in -20F. I'd prefer the rain, which is rarely cold in Ireland.
Just did a double-take when I saw page 21 of the Jan/Feb Running Times.
Can't figure out why you're on the left side while Captain America made the center photo, but it's great to see you nonetheless.
Yes, you're the official Fargo marathon posterboy! Right on.
I'm thinking it's the boredom - those repeats of LH. Try Frasier instead. Be careful - a mate of mine broke his arm on the treadmill - he lost concentration and was spat off the back.
I think I'd rather be chased by the mountain lion than run on a treadmill! : )
